There are two approaches using hypnosis and hypnotherapy that can be taken to assist you in losing weight and I have a great deal of experience in assisting people to attain their ideal weight by both methods. Suggestion therapy (the 'Paul McKenna' stuff) can be very effective short term in giving people a boost to get them on the right track towards their fitness and physique goals but if there is an underlying anxiety that causes 'issues' with food (such as comfort eating) then Pure Hypnoanalysis is most definately the way forward to get you a permanent life-changing result.

Many hypnotherapists offer 'hypnotherapy' for helping people lose weight, indeed clients who contact me for help with weight loss will often be expecting 'hypnotherapy' to help them. The reason for this is partly because they are not aware of other treatments, and because the only method that is ever presented on television is by the likes of Paul McKenna - which very often present a skewed and carefully edited perspective on 'success stories'.

Hypnotherapy is an excellent way of helping people lose weight providing there is minimal emotional connection with food. However, most people that consult me for help with weight loss do have an emotional connection with food.

What is an emotional connection to food?

People who are overweight, are generally in this situation because they feel that eating food somehow makes them feel 'better'. It is not a natural state of being to overeat - so when people do overeat, it is generally because food somehow gives them comfort. This is an emotional relationship with food. Indeed, I don't know of a single clients who I have helped with weight loss, with permanent results, who didn't have an emotional relationship with food.

... but I want hypnotherapy for helping me with weight loss ...

Hypnotherapy is always a quick, but non-permanent fix. I don't know of a single person who has permanently gained control of their weight effortlessly after being treated with hypnotherapy. I know of plenty who have seeminly miraculously lost lots of weight through hypnotherapy - only to find a year or so later, they've piled all the weight back on, or worse still, have developed some other unwanted habit (such as smoking).

Television programs such as those that present Paul McKenna, will often show such miracle 'quick fixes' - but seldom will you see the treated person years later. Hypnotherapy is very often like 'papering over the cracks' of a wall that is suffering dampness. Sooner or later it's inevitable that the paper will begin peeling off, because the real problem has not been dealt with.

Surely it's better to get rid of the dampness before trying to paper over it?

Why do people have problems with weight loss?

Very often, people have difficulty losing weight because of their emotional connection with food. They eat to comfort themselves. Comfort eating is caused by anxiety and if the anxiety is not dealt with, there will always be 'issues' - if not with food, with something else. Anxiety is the sole cause of people being overweight (unless there is a valid medical explanation - which there rarely is).

Many 'hypnotherapists' will claim to be able to 'quick fix' weight loss issues, indeed some will be willing to claim that they can completely 'sort' issues with losing weight permanently - but this is simply not true. Hypnotherapy cannot permanently get eating habits under control - because at no point does hypnotherapy deal with the underlying cause of why the overeating is occuring in the first place.

It's completely understandable that people do seek a quick fix - who doesn't - but do you really want a quick fix? Wouldn't you want to make a little more effort and release the anxiety which is causing you to have problems with food, so that you can be permently free of the uncontrolled urges surrounding food? Wouldn't this be a better route? Once the anxiety that is causing compulsive activity with food is removes, you will naturally eat when you're hungry, and not eat when you're not. You will naturally reach you ideal weight without any effort - and at the same time your life will improve in so many other directions as well (because the anxiety will be causing other problems in your life as well).

Hypnotherapy and Pure Hypnoanalysis can be used to help people with weight loss

Hypnotherapy can be a very effective route in kick starting a diet, and indeed maintaining long term weight loss goals but only providing the person being treated has very low levels of anxiety. In my experience though, most clients that I see, who have problems with slimming and weight loss, do have an emotional connection with food, which is being driven by anxiety.

To me it would be completely immoral, and wrong, to 'claim' that hypnotherapy is going to 'sort them out' when I know the results will only be temporary at best. I am very straight with my clients about this. Most clients when they understand why they are having difficulty losing weight - opt for the route to permamently changing their eating habits and lives for the better - which is Pure Hypnoanalysis.

Pure Hypnoanalysis is the only therapy in the World that deals with the cause of why people are having problems with food (in this case over eating). It does this by allowing the client to release the anxiety that is actually causing over eating, and when this occurs, the over eating ends because the cause, the anxiety, has been released. Only when the anxiety has been released, will the person be truly free of the compulsion to eat unnecessary amounts of food - and the results are permanent. No other therapy can do this.
