NLP : Nero-Linguistic Programming

NLP is probably one of the most over-hyped therapies in the modern world. Having read many books on NLP (effectively teaching me NLP to a master practioner level) - I have to be honest, I find virtually no use to these techniques in the day to day therapeutic environment.

That said, NLP does provide some useful bits, but these bits are commonly just good old fashioned hypnotherapy (suggestion therapy) re-badged as 'NLP'. These odd bits of useful knowledge are certainly not worth the thousands of pounds people charge as 'trainers' of NLP.

Unfortunately, some NLP practioners claim to be able to do miraculous things with people suffering from anxiety - but I have not yet a single person who has benfited significantly long term from being exposed to such techniques.

NLP does however offer a few useful 'tricks' in areas of self improvement which I occasionally use with my clients, but day in day out, I seldom find any need whatsoever to use NLP in my therapy room.

What is NLP?

NLP wass developed by John Grinder and Richard Bandler in the 1970s. NLP, like most other therapies only deals with the symptom itself - so at best will allow a person to 'cope' a bit better with certain situations or feelings. NLP to me, in most part anyway, seems to be a way of expressing the real world with a new language that 'sounds' interesting but is nevertheless simply over complicating the real world. There are useful techniques that I occasionally use, but in most part, these techniques are not new and are simple a re-hash of techniques used in hypnotherapy (suggestion therapy) for over a hundred years.

How long does NLP take?

This is very much a 'How long is a piece of string' type question. If someone is attempting to use NLP to treat a symptoms of anxiety (for example Anorexia) - then a person could expect to be receiving treatment for the rest of their lives.

I don't practice NLP to help people with symptoms of anxiety because I know of a much more effective therapy

If NLP was effective at helping people permanently live their lives free of their symptoms, I would be practicing it right now, but it seldom (if ever) achieves this. Pure Hypnoanalysis is the only therapy in the World that can help someone live their lives permanently free of their symptoms because it's the only therapy in the World that deals with the cause of the problem, and not the problem itself. Once the cause is deal with (which is anxiety), the symptoms go away - permanently.
